On Dec 9 2024, Boston legal team gave presentation about importance of health proxy and power of attorney to FISCO Seniors.
A Health Proxy and Power of Attorney (POA) are two important legal tools that allow individuals to make decisions for themselves or designate someone else to make decisions on their behalf in specific circumstances.
Health Proxy: This is a legal document in which an individual, appoints another person to make healthcare decisions on their behalf if they become unable to do so due to illness, injury, or incapacity.
The health proxy can only make medical decisions when the principal is unable to communicate their wishes. The agent’s authority may include decisions related to medical treatment, surgery, or end-of-life care, depending on the terms outlined in the document.
Power of Attorney (POA): A Power of Attorney is a broader legal document that allows a principal to designate someone to manage their financial or legal affairs, either in specific situations or generally.
The distinction between the two lies in their focus: health proxy deals with healthcare decisions, while POA addresses financial, legal, or other personal matters.
Legal team encouraged FISCO members to make their important decisons in timely manner.
