On Oct 28th 2024, Six Pillars of Brain Health session was conducted by Theresa Beth from AARP which focused on  scientific research that shows a healthy lifestyle may protect the brain.  Staying Sharp can help you develop meaningful and lasting practices that are based on the six pillars.

The six pillars are pretty straightforward, but they pack a punch when it comes to supporting our brain health. Here’s a quick rundown:

  1. Be Social: It’s so important to maintain strong connections with friends, family, and our community. Social interactions can really boost our mood and cognitive function. So, let’s make sure we’re reaching out to loved ones regularly!

  2. Eat Right: Nutrition plays a huge role in how our brains function. We need to make sure we’re getting the right nutrients to keep our bodies and brains in tip-top shape. Think colorful fruits, veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats!

  3. Manage Stress: The way we handle stress can significantly impact our brain health. Finding effective ways to cope with stress—like mindfulness, meditation, or even just taking a break—can make a world of difference.

  4. Ongoing Exercise: Staying physically active is crucial. It doesn’t have to be intense workouts; even regular walks or fun activities can keep our bodies moving and our brains sharp.

  5. Restorative Sleep: Quality sleep is a must! It’s during sleep that our brains do a lot of their healing and processing. Prioritizing good sleep habits can really enhance our overall well-being.

  6. Engage Your Brain: Every day is a new opportunity to learn something new. Whether it’s reading, puzzles, or picking up a new hobby, keeping our brains engaged is key to maintaining cognitive health.

Members enjoyed the session that encouraged them to develop meaningful and lasting practices based on these pillars. It’s all about making small changes that can lead to big improvements in our brain health over time.
